Project: Secondary Containment

Industry: Manufacturer of Specialty Aerospace Components

Substrate: Concrete

Problem:  Aggressive chemicals and sulfuric acid destroyed the concrete bunds after many years of service at this plant. To prevent the damaged concrete from continuing to degrade and deteriorate the customer had two choices: total replacement of the containment area or repair of the damaged bunds.  Replacement of the concrete containment area was not an option because it was not possible for the customer to shut down their operation for the extended time needed to replace the entire area.

Solution:  To reduce downtime and provide long-term chemical protection against a wide range of substances including acids and alkalis Advanced Specialty Coatings recommended repairing the damaged areas using Belzona epoxies and protective coatings. We first prepared the surface by abrading and eliminating the loose and deteriorating concrete. Then the damaged cracks, holes and divots were filled with a hard-wearing concrete repair composite that delivers exceptional compressive strength, good impact resistance and excellent adhesion to concrete. Lastly to protect the containment areas we applied a long-lasting protective coating that is resistant to chemicals including both sulfuric and hydrochloride acids.

Result:  Advanced Specialty Coatings repair was time-efficient, cost-effective and will deliver long-term protection against a wide range of chemical substances. The chemical bund was repaired and back in service over a weekend with no loss of production time.

Photograph Descriptions:  Sulfuric Acid solution from manufacturing was damaging the integrity of this waste diversion bund

Photograph Descriptions: Mechanical abrasion was employed to prepare and eliminate any loose and deteriorated concrete.  any cracks, holes and significant 'divits' were then repaired with a epoxy employed to bond to the concrete surfaces
Photograph Descriptions: The bund was coated with an epoxy protective coating that is resistant to the chemicals including both sulfuric and hydrochloride acids.
